Planted: 2016

This tree is towards the top of the Malus Walk, on the north side.

Catalpa Bungei (formerly Catalpa fargesii f. duclouxii) is native to China.

Purchased from Pan-Global Plants, Frampton-on-Severn, Gloucestershire. A gift of S Tooms.

‘Bungei’ honours the Russian botanist Alexander Von Bunge (1803 – 1890), who collected its seeds.

Flowers are arranged in a corymb and are densely spotted with pink.

Cultivated in China for its wood, which is used for coffins, ancestral tablets, and oars. Also grown as an ornamental tree.
Related to the more commonly grown Indian Bean Tree, Catalpa bignonioides, from the south west US.
