This tree can be found near the south-west corner of the Arboretum, in the Chinese and Japanese section.

Distribution:Common in cultivation, rare in the wild.
A few plants grow around the Ise Bay area of central Honshū, Japan’s largest island.

The Star Magnolia A small species of Magnolia attaining a height of around 2.5 m. The white to pink flowers open before the leaves, with 12 or more ‘tepals’. Magnolias are primitive and have not developed the differentiation into sepals and petals found in most flowering plants, hence tepals.
Growth Habit:A small shrub with often sinuous branches tipped with large buds in autumn which open into the star-like flowers in spring.
Leaf:The leaves are about 10 cm long by about 4 cm wide, bronze-green initially turning green as they mature.
