Hamamelis x Intermedia ‘Feuerzauber‘ is a cultivar, probably of German origin, of the hybrid Hamamelis x Intermedia.
Hamamelis x Intermedia is a hybrid cross, of garden origin, between Hamamelis japonica (Japanese Witch Hazel) and Hamamelis mollis (Chinese Witch Hazel). Its Latin name refers to its intermediate appearance between those two species.
Supplied by J Parker, Old Trafford, Manchester.
It is a deciduous shrub growing to 4 m tall and wide, with zig-zagging stems and alternate, simple leaves 15 cm long, which turn yellow in Autumn.
This cultivar has red flowers with twisted petals which appear on bare stems in midwinter through early Spring. The German ‘Feuerzauber’ translates as: Magic Fire or Fire Charm, in English.
Numerous cultivars of this hybrid have been developed.
