Purchased from James Smith (Scotland Nurseries), Tansley, Matlock, Derbyshire.

A hybrid cross of two Eurasian species: Spiraea cantoniensis and Spiraea trilobata.

Named in honour of the 19th century Belgian horticulturist Louis Louis Benoît van Houtte (1810 – 1876).
