Philadelphus × lemonei ‘Boule d’Argent’

This shrub is at the northern end of the Philadelphus Walk.

Replaced with a cutting from the original which died suddenly in 2007.

‘Boule d’Argent’ is a cultivar of Philadelphus × lemoinei. Pierre Louis Victor Lemoine (1823 – 1911) was a celebrated and prolific flower breeder based in Nancy, France. In 1884 he produced Philadelphus × lemoinei a hybrid between Philadelphus microphyllus and Philadelphus coronarius.

‘Boule d’Argent’. – Flowers 44 mm wide, scarcely fragrant, more or less double, borne five to seven together in a cymose cluster. Calyx-tube slightly hairy, sepals long-acuminate, glabrous. Leaves up to 6 by 4.5 cm, broad-ovate, with five to seven teeth on each side. Of bushy habit, to about 120 cm high.
