Dark Night’ is a hybrid lilac, derived from crossing of the Early Lilac Syringa oblata and common lilac Syringa vulgaris. Bred at Descanso Gardens, Los Angeles US, by John Sobeck in 1955. ‘Dark Night’ is from the second wave of Descanso lilac breeding. Although they were bred in the 1950s, these cultivars were not named and registered until 1966.
