Native to Mexico, Guatemala and Honduras.
A subspecies of Acer negundo Boxelder Maple.
Purchased from Pan-Global Plants, Frampton-on-Severn, Gloucestershire.
Male and female flowers on separate trees, followed by winged fruits on female trees.
Introduced circa 1890.
A protein present in the seeds has been identified as a major risk factor for, and possibly the cause of, a disease in horses, seasonal pasture myopathy (SPM); an equine neurological disease.
Pollen, released in Spring is a severe allergen.
