Distribution: Originated at Plantieres, near Metz, France, in the nursery of Messers Simon-Louis.
Planting Date: 1929 purchased from Hillier Nurseries, Romsey, Hampshire
Growth Habit:A fastigate tree like Populus Italica (Lombardy Poplar). It differs in its downy twigs, stronger lower branching and bushier and broader head.

Leaf:Variable – diamond, triangular or ovate. Smooth, both surfaces are green.

Introduction Date:Originated at Plantieres, near Metz, France, in the nursery of Messers Simon-Louis. Some fifteen self-sown seedlings were found, of which at least two, one male, one female, were propagated and put into commerce in 1884–5. Name given by German botanist and architect Camillo Karl Schneider (1876-1951).
Anecdotes and Comments: Largely replaced Populus italica (Lombardy Poplar) as an ornamental.
Both male and female clones are grown.
